The process will start with an initial meeting of an hour and a quarter during which time I will carry out an assessment and we have the opportunity to meet each other, to look at the issues which are causing you concern and to explore how we might work together. If we decide to proceed then we would normally arrange 6 weekly sessions. This gives you an experience of working with me therapeutically. I will also give you a Working Agreement which sets out the parameters of the therapy.
We may spend the sessions talking but I may also introduce you to some more creative techniques such as visualisation, guided imagery, simple mindfulness techniques or suggest some drawing or chair work or looking at a dream you have had. Each session is tailor-made to what you need at that time. Even if you do not think of yourself as creative you can access that part of yourself. And, there is no pressure to do anything that you do not feel comfortable with.
Counselling can be seen as a short-term process, generally 6-20 weekly sessions, which can focus on a specific issue. Psychotherapy is a longer-term process of 6 months or more. Working with unconscious ways of being and untangling threads from childhood are often important in this work.
At the 5th or 6th session we will review the work. You may decide that you have reached a resolution or you may decide to continue. We will review the work as we go along.
My usual fee is £50 per session and I have a limited number of concessionary places for those on low incomes.
