Why might I need counselling or psychotherapy?
Life is a journey which includes inevitable setbacks and, for some, painful traumatic experiences. Exploring these with a therapist can be a valuable support at these times.
You may be facing a time of crisis, feel dissatisfied with work or the quality of your relationships. You may feel your life lacks meaning or want to resolve issues from the past. Therapy can provide a place of safety to explore issues through empathy and understanding. It can help you gain insight and offers self-responsibility and choice in one’s life.
What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
There are alternative views expressed about the difference between counselling and psychotherapy even in the therapy world. Personally, I believe that firstly there is a difference in qualification and training. Psychotherapy training will generally require a further 2 years of study after a counselling qualification.
Secondly, there is usually a difference in the duration of therapeutic support. Counselling is usually offered for short-term work and often will involve a specific issue. Psychotherapy will be offered to clients whose issues require a much greater depth of understanding and generally extend for a longer period.
